The Oconaluftee entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is in nearby Cherokee on US 441. Southern Appalachian mountain culture, heritage, and history are kept alive in this section of the Great Smokies at the Mountain Farm Museum. The Museum is a series of buildings that were located in the park before its creation that have been moved and rebuilt at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center.
MOUNTAIN FARM MUSEUM
Note the size of the logs used in construction of this house. Very few trees of this size exist today in the Smokies after extensive logging in the early 1900's.
MINGUS MILL
Just up the road is the historic Mingus Mill site, where local folks brought their corn and some wheat to be ground up using the power of water, gears, and stones.
MINGO FALLS
Just outside the park is Mingo Falls. A short hike rewards visitors with a beautiful 120 foot waterfall, one of the most beautiful in these mountains.
