HISTORY OF DEALS GAP AND THE TAIL OF THE DRAGON

Deals Gap is a narrow valley between the Great Smoky Mountains through which people have traveled for hundreds of years. The road was eventually paved and is now a stretch of US Hwy 129 that leads from the western mountains of NC into TN.

In recent years, it has been affectionately referred to as “The Tail of the Dragon”. It became known as the Tail of the Dragon because of the unique shape of the road as it appears on a map - there are 318 curves in the first 11 miles!

Over time, the road seems to have taken on a life of it’s own.  People come to Deals Gap from all over the United States and now the world to "tame the dragon" and experience this unique adventure.  There are rallies, runs, and meets of various kinds during the year as well as individual enthusiasts searching for adventurous motorcycle rides through Deals Gap and the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

Deals Gap is popular for sports car enthusiasts as well. There are several rallies held during the year by various sports car owner groups. Fords, Subarus, BMWs, Miatas, Spyders, Ferraris, and other "Dragon Slayers" can all be spotted in Deals Gap from time to time.

Of course, law enforcement authorities in NC and TN make sure that everyone drives and rides Deals Gap in a safe and responsible manner. They are very active both on the ground and in the air enforcing traffic laws.
